After Cyclone Gabrielle hit Hawke’s Bay the Mates4Life team saw a need to adapt our programme and an even greater need to continue our ongoing mental wellbeing support to our community. From this the Kai & Kōrero programme was established. This involves taking a BBQ trailer out to workplaces, providing and cooking the kai and talking to those attending about their mental well-being, some coping tools and how to check in on each other.
We now have a purpose built BBQ trailer thanks to the generous support of Ministry of Primary Industries and GC3. It’s full of gadgets including a large monitor which enables the Mates4Life team to deliver their Awareness Talk as well as providing the kai.
The BBQ trailer plays an integral role in creating a relaxed atmosphere at a wide range of events including our popular Kai & Kōrero breakfasts through to attending key community events. Thanks to local engineering firm DSK Engineering for building our awesome BBQ trailer and to Speedy Signs for the great signwriting.
