We are thrilled to have partnered with two incredibly talented local Māori artists Aaron Greaves and Tim Whaitiri Henderson in the creation of a special taonga which will be presented to businesses that have completed a Mates4Life programme.
Each taonga is made from Rimu Wood endemic – meaning this tree grows naturally nowhere else in the world. Rimu trees and wood are long-lived trees which ties in nicely to the kaupapa of preserving life. The Rimu tree leaves were used by Māori and believed to have healing properties, just like the Mates4Life kaupapa around providing businesses and communities with tools and strategies to heal.
The pattern designs laser engraved hauhau, Pakati and Niho Taniwha often found on tukutuku panels and in tāniko weaving. The designs have a symbolic meaning of emotional grief felt when a loved one passes but covered in love gives strength to all to heal.
The Pounamu was sourced out of Te Waipounamu. The stone represents strength, integrity, life and growth. The porowhita or circular disc represents the life cycles/ life’s cycles the journey and continuation.
