Kia ora! I'm Maggie Higgins

Plumbing apprentice. Life lover. Mental health advocate.
This May, I’m running 5km every day to reach 100km total in memory of someone special I lost to suicide in May 2020.
Why this matters
Mental health awareness is incredibly important, especially in the trades industry, where the workplace culture often discourages open conversations about struggles.
As a woman in the trades, I’ve faced countless challenges. When I first started, my teachers said I was “wasting my life” and that “there’s no place for women in this industry.”
I proved them wrong.
But along the way, I encountered mental health struggles—as many tradies do—often feeling alone with nowhere to turn. The trades culture often discourages open conversations about our struggles.
Thanks to support and reaching out, I got through it.
It's Time to Normalise the "Awkward Conversation"
This 100km challenge is about encouraging that crucial first step: starting the conversation about mental health.
